Eye to Eye

June 30, 2025|Poetry

Today,
the hawk did not circle above,
it came down,
to the wire,
to the line between worlds.

It did not ask for distance.
It asked to be met.

It dove
not just for the rabbit,
but for truth,
for instinct,
for the pulse of what hides
in soft places.

I watched, unafraid.
It watched, unblinking.
Our hearts, beating at the same height.
Our eyes, locked across silence
so ancient,
I forgot to breathe.

No message was spoken,
but everything was said.

This was not a moment.
It was a remembering.
That I, too,
am a hawk
in human skin.
And the fence I stand on
is not a boundary,
it is a launch point.

Today, the hawk did not circle above, it came down, to the wire, to the line between worlds.
